Lares Treks to Machu Picchu

Adventure in the heights of the Andes of Peru

Step into the heart of the Andes on the Lares Trek, a remarkable journey that blends dramatic mountain scenery with genuine cultural connection. Along the trail, you’ll walk past sparkling lagoons, rushing rivers, waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks, then share unforgettable moments with rural Andean communities who have preserved their customs for generations. This is the route for travelers who want more than a hike to Machu Picchu—they want a deeper, more personal experience of Peru.

Because you don’t need a permit to hike this trail, it’s especially easy to plan, and while all hikes in the Andes are physically challenging, this hike moves a little slower, making it a great fit for our younger, older, and more casual hikers!

Why travelers love the Lares Trek

The Lares Trek offers a quieter, more intimate alternative to busier routes. As you move through high-altitude landscapes, you’ll see llamas, alpacas, and sheep grazing across the mountains and experience the peaceful beauty of the Sacred Valley from a different perspective. Time spent with local families adds something truly special, giving you the chance to learn about traditional weaving, daily life in the Andes, and the strong cultural heritage that still shapes these communities today.

This trek combines natural beauty, cultural immersion, and the reward of reaching one of the world’s most iconic destinations.

Best Time to Hike the Lares Trek

Generally speaking, Peru has two seasons: dry and wet. Hiking the Lares Trek is possible during both seasons.

During the dry season (May through October), you can expect warm, dry days and cold nights. Though this also coincides with the tourism season, you’ll experience fine trekking conditions.

During the wet season (November through April), you should be prepared for rainy days and occasional mists. As this is a less popular time to hike, you’ll meet fewer people along the way. If you decide to hike the Lares Trek during the wet season, note that the route is closed in February due to annual renovations.

No matter when you choose to go, our Inca Trail tours will bring you face to face with some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes of South America.
