The Salkantay Trek follows an ancient Inca path that once connected the city of Cusco with the sacred citadel of Machu Picchu. Named after the majestic Salkantay Mountain (6,271 m / 20,574 ft), meaning “Savage Mountain” in Quechua, this route was used by the Incas as a spiritual trail through the Andes Mountains.

Today, the Salkantay Trek is celebrated as one of the best alternative treks to the Inca Trail, offering breathtaking landscapes that range from snow-covered peaks to tropical jungles. Along the way, trekkers experience authentic Andean culture, ancient traditions, and the deep spiritual connection the Incas had with nature.

The peak season runs from June to August, when the weather is most stable and perfect for photography, though trails can be busier. For a quieter experience, consider April, May, September, or early October—when the landscapes are still lush and green after the rainy season.

While the Salkantay Trek is open year-round, the rainy season (November to March) can bring heavy showers and slippery paths, making conditions more challenging.

Best adventure ever!! Altitude Peru provided the best journey and experience for us at Machu Picchu!! The 2-day trek was perfect for those that want to get some hiking in before the reward of seeing Machu Picchu while also getting to see other Inca sites and flora and fauna along the Inca trail. The trip was organized perfectly and we always had everything we needed with clear instructions. Robinzon was the best tour guide and made the trip unforgettable and so much fun. He was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, encouraging, patient, and funny. Highly recommend Altitude Peru if you are planning your trip to Machu Picchu!!!

Loved It! Really really enjoyed this experience! Adrian was extremely professional and helpful. He was able to provide a last minute llama feeding experience for us and accompanied us all the way through, taking so many photos and videos for us! The next day we did the Maras and Moray tour and he provided a private tour, where he was always checking in if we were okay and stopped at great viewpoints. We even had an experience to see how Inca Beer was made. Overall very positive experience, highly recommended to anyone!

Wonderful time feeding the cutest llamas with great guide We booked this tour last minute with Adrian. He arranged it quickly and was extremely communicative over WhatsApp. He was incredibly knowledgeable, was very friendly, and was highly professional. Rainbow mountain and Red Valley This was the best day! My guide organised the tour so we were the first tourists to reach the summit. It was spectacular up there! Luckily it was perfect weather too. Robison was my guide for Rainbow mountain and also for Machu Picchu last week. He is the best guide. He cares deeply for nature and the wildlife amd is very knowledge, kind and gentle. Machu picchu tour We booked a tour for Machu Picchu with Altitude. What an amazing tour! A locally owned company, because of their loxal knowledge qe are able to get tickets to circuit 2 when all other companies told me they were sold out months in advance. It began with a lovely driver collecting us, very comfortable car and good, friendly driver. The train was a so beautiful, stunning scenery. We were greeted by a lovely man who assisted us and our bags to oue hotel. Thr next morning we met our guide, Robbie. Robbie was a brilliant, kind and knowledgable guide. He ensured that the tour went smoothly. He was very personable, fluent English speaker and he was sensitive to all our needs. Also a very talented photographer. We can't recommend Robbie and Peru Alitude enough! Door to door service, all our needs were taken care of.

100% Recommended I had an amazing experience with Altitude Peru Tours from start to finish. As soon as I landed in Cusco, the agency arranged a driver named Juan to pick us up. He was incredibly kind, helped us with our bags, and made sure we were comfortable during the drive to Ollantaytambo to catch our train to Aguas Calientes. He constantly checked on how we were feeling, which was especially thoughtful given the altitude. That same evening, someone from the company called me to clearly explain the itinerary for our Machu Picchu visit the next day, including details about the main circuit and timing. They also took the time to answer all my questions, which made me feel very prepared and at ease. During the tour, we were lucky to have Monica as our guide. She was not only knowledgeable and friendly, but also amazing at taking photos and videos perfect if you love capturing content for social media! On our return, Ronald drove us back from Ollantaytambo to Cusco. He was just as kind and professional, making the journey smooth and comfortable. On our last day, the company even reached out to offer transportation back to the airport and arranged for Ronald to take us, which we really appreciated. Overall, their cars were clean, their communication was excellent, and the entire experience felt very well organized and personal. I’ve traveled to many countries around the world, and Altitude Peru Tours truly went above and beyond. 100% recommended!
